Title:
Composite Audio Piece #1/
An audio piece compiled from recordings made upon my request by various musicians in accordance with written instruction.
– I wanted to create a musical arrangement orchestrated through sets of written direction given to a number of participating performers. The instructions consist of four factors: Instruments and or sound types allowed, approximate duration of the recording, general atmospheric description and anticipated date of completion. Each participant is to record his/her own section at home or in a studio without knowledge of the other participant’s contributions or how and where their portion exists within the final body of work. Each individual recording functions as a self contained entity, a unit created within a contextual vacuum. Each of these components can in turn come together to create a larger whole. The final outcome is in many ways an audio equivalent to the Surrealist Exquisite Corpse.
– Beginning on July 22nd 2006 I have been emailing invitations to select artists and musicians to record short audio recordings in their homes. Each recording ranges between one and two minutes in length. The corresponding recorded tracks are then sent to me where I edit, master and arrange each piece placing them into appropriate sections of the final composition. In the final stages of editing and mixing I add accompanying musical portions to each segment as a way to bridge gaps between disparate sections and to generally fill out the aural framework. This project is currently a work in progress. The projected date of completion will be on July 22nd 2008 capping the project at an exact two years of cumulative work.
